Donald Trump was once again targeted for assassination over the weekend. I find this deeply troubling for our republic. Equaling as troubling is the response by Kamala Harris. Her statement (below and linked) lacks heart, leadership, and empathy. The cold words read as a chore to be checked off a list.
While the internet is ablaze with finger-pointing and conspiracy theories, I wanted to imagine what it would be like to have strong leadership during this time of division. Below is an example of what Americans need to hear from a Vice President seeking to become President.
Americans,
We are blessed for the safety of former President Trump after another assassination attempt. First, I want to reassure you that I will work with President Biden to get our house in order; we must take the necessary measures to protect all presidential candidates during this heightened time of division. Second, I want to let you know that while Donald Trump and I are competing for the Presidency, we are still united when it comes to America. He is not the enemy and must not be treated as such. Third, this administration and the next will cooperate with Congress to investigate the lapses of the Secret Service so we can fill the necessary gaps and ensure all presidential candidates are protected now and in the future. Transparency, accountability, and cooperation must be a priority.
Americans are anxious, and in these times of negativity and division, I understand it can be easy to embrace the negativity or just turn away. We must remember Lincoln’s words and appeal to “the better angels of our nature." We must not give in to the negativity. We must look for the best in each other. We must lift each other up instead of pushing each other down. We must respond in kind rather than in anger. We must turn away from hate and embrace love— love for our neighbors, our countrymen, and the United States of America.
I want a president who is in charge and accountable, can see other’s perspectives, and inspires positivity in America. A former President has been hunted on a Golf Course and shot at while at the podium. A statement with accountability and a commitment to action that unites is needed. If Harris wants to turn the page and inspire hope, she must lead when the moments present themselves, turning the negativity into positivity.
Peace and Love,
Jeff Mayhugh
