I was talking with my oldest daughter, Julia. She and her sisters are very antagonistic toward each other at times. I was encouraging her, as the oldest, to evaluate the relationship she has with them and the relationship she wants to have with them. The topic of Love came up.
I asked her: What do you think Love is? She said a feeling.
We debated back and forth for a bit, and then I went upstairs and took a shower. As I was getting dressed, my wife facetimed me with some exciting news. I love that she facetimed me because that way I got to see her beautiful smile when she told me the news.
I went downstairs, grabbed a couple of books, and sat on the front porch to read. As my body warmed from the sun, my brow began to sweat. I decided to write.
Here it is, my latest poetry drop. Love is…
Love is...
Love is giving a positive reaction instead of a negative one.
Love is forgiving the negative reaction.
Love is a warm hug and a kiss on the forehead.
Love is the smell of an old tee shirt.
Love is a difficult conversation.
Love is the first person you call.
Love is a gaze.
Love is doing the hard thing.
Love is a presence.
Love is an emotion.
Love is a feeling.
Love is an action.
Love is a lot of things,
But most of all,
Love is a choice.
As I wrote this, I thought about my wife and daughters. I thought about their smiles. All the times they have forgiven me and all the times I have forgiven them. All the cuddles, the talks, and the emotion. All the hard things I have done for them and all the hard things they have done for me. Love isn’t perfect, but it’s enough.
Peace & Love,
Jeff Mayhugh
