Modern division in the R and D parties took hold during the Reagan admin (IMO). The political theater of television really changed the game during that time and that is when the parties began solidifying their stranglehold on the election process. The rise of Applied Postmodernism and the extremism of Evangelicals in the late 80s and 90s has led to the foundations for modern cultural divisions on each side. Obama built the coalition of left wing cultural groups and people focus on that, but it's the pop culturalization of modern politics that started in the 80s, or perhaps the idolatry of cultural and political leaders thereof, if you ask me that has given us modern division.
